Joel Barlow

Joel has been in the financial industry for the past 26 years after graduating from the University of Alabama in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He practiced as a CPA for the first decade of his career with Wilkins Miller, P.C. in Mobile, AL. In that role, he was able to assist his clients with tax planning, income tax return preparation, and many other facets of their financial lives. For the next few years, Joel assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer of a multi-state holding company called IPC Industries, Inc., also based in Mobile. There he managed acquisitions and divestitures for the company while overseeing the performance of many entities that made up the holding company. For the next dozen years, Joel worked for several different large investment companies (Hartford Life Insurance Co. and Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P., e.g.) to assist with securing capital for their lines of investment products. In that role, he acted in an advisory role to many financial advisors/planners across the southeastern United States.

Joel is now using his experience in the financial services business to assist individuals and families with comprehensive tax consulting. This includes tax planning, tax return preparation and retirement income planning. With his experience in the corporate taxation environment, he is also working with small businesses to assist with their tax needs.

Joel and his wife, Kara, have been married for 16 years. They have two daughters, MaryGlynn, 15, and Tanner, 13. When not assisting his clients or spending time with his family, Joel enjoys taking hikes with his dogs and playing bad golf.

Kara Barlow

Kara Boltz Barlow is a 1994 graduate of Spring Hill College with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. She began her career at Wilkins Miller, P.C. in Mobile, AL as a staff accountant. Over the next 5 years, she specialized in preparation and review of individual, corporate, trust and exempt organizations tax returns as well as conducted audits of small businesses, nonprofit and governmental entities. She provided attest services, determined tax projections, and performed tax research on various issues relating to clients. With a move to Birmingham, she continued her professional career at DLHC, Inc. for 2 years as an audit manager responsible for entire audit engagements from planning, to fieldwork to preparation of financial statements.

While focusing on raising her family, she began to volunteer in her community serving as Treasurer and President of her children’s PTO, overseeing numerous fundraising events for her beloved charities and is currently President-elect for The Dance Foundation (Homewood based community development not-for-profit) board of directors. She also serves on various finance committees and continues to provide tax and accounting services for clients on a self-employment basis.
